LNG
The propulsion of the ship, the ‘Ternsund’, is provided by two tanks each filled with 315 m3 LNG fuel, eco-friendly and energy-efficient. The ship, as part of the “Into the future – Baltic SO2lution” project, has also been equipped with additional facilities to minimise harmful emissions.
Welcome
The arrival of the Ternsund on 8 August in Rotterdam had a fairly official touch. The ship was festively welcomed by the owners and manufacturers of this tanker for oil products and chemicals, by representatives of the shipyard and the Port of Rotterdam, members of the European Commissions and the European Parliament, as well as other stakeholders and co-partners.
Cooling down the tanks
Linde Gas, and its Belgian partner AQ from Antwerp, were assigned to cool down the LNG fuel tanks. LNG is extremely cold and it is, therefore, essential that both tanks are cooled to -160°C before filling. This is done with liquid nitrogen, which lowers the temperature of the tanks by approximately 10 degrees every hour. The complete job takes around 18 hours, during which safety and quality are of paramount priority. Commissioned by Shell, both tanks will subsequently be bunkered with LNG.
Shipping company Terntank will also have the other three ships cooled down in the port of Rotterdam.
